Railway accident at Ajikawaguchi station
In the railway accident at Ajikawaguchi station ( Japanese 西 成Bahnhof 列車 脱 線 火災 事故 , Nishinari-sen ressha dassen kasai jiko ) on the Nishinari Line (now the Sakurajima Line ) in Osaka , Japan , on January 29, 1940, 190 passengers , at least 82, died were injured. The high number of casualties was due to the fact that the train during the morning rush hour with commuters was crowded and fire came. There are different versions of how the accident happened:
- The crashed gasoline multiple unit train with three cars derailed when a switch was switched under the moving train . The train overturned and the gas tanks caught fire.
- According to a contemporary press release by the Associated Press , the train hit a row of tank cars loaded with gasoline , the gasoline from the damaged freight cars flowed into the derailed passenger train and caught fire.
The rail accident was the one with the highest death toll in Japan.
