Udo Block

Udo Block (born April 23, 1941 in Reichraming ; † August 22, 1997 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and police officer . He was mayor of the Reichraming community, a member of the Upper Austrian state parliament and its second president.

education and profession

After elementary school, Block attended secondary school and then learned to be a car electrician at the Steyr works. He completed military service, disarmed as a corporal of the reserve and in 1962 became a police officer at the Steyr Federal Police Directorate . He passed the official high school diploma in Vienna in 1972 and attended the officers' school in Vienna between 1972 and 1974. He subsequently worked as a police lieutenant from 1975, was promoted to first lieutenant in the same year and to department commander in 1978. In 1979 he was appointed captain and in 1982 major. Block finally returned from Vienna to Steyr, where he became Central Inspector in 1983 and Lieutenant Colonel in 1985. In 1986 he was on leave due to his political activities. He was also a teacher for the training of police officers on duty and a member of the disciplinary commission at the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

Politics and functions

Block was involved between 1958 and 1962 as chairman of the Reichraming youth union and from 1972 was a board member of the SPÖ district organization Steyr, where he had become a member of the SPÖ in 1961. In 1972 he took over the position of chairman of the SPÖ-Reichraming and rose to become district chairman of the SPÖ Steyr-Land in October 1979. He was elected to the Reichraming local council in 1972 and served as vice mayor between 1973 and 1979. On October 7, 1979 he was elected mayor, where he held this position until his untimely death. He also represented the SPÖ in the Upper Austrian state parliament from December 10, 1986 and was second president of the state parliament from March 2, 1995. Block was a member and president of the state parliament until his death.

Private

Block had already suffered a heart attack in 1995, from which he initially recovered well. In 1997 he suffered another heart attack while mowing the lawn in his garden, and neither the community nor the emergency doctor could save him. He left behind his wife and a grown daughter.
