Aracaju railway accident

The Aracaju railway accident of March 20, 1946 was a derailment and the worst railway accident that ever occurred in Brazil . 185 dead and 300 injured were the result.

Starting position

The accident occurred near Aracaju in the state of Sergipe on a railway line on the Viação Férrea Federal do Leste Brasileiro . The train was on its way from Aracaju to Capela with around 1,000 passengers . Behind Aracaju the route led over a steep incline from the coast to the higher hinterland.

the accident

The locomotive , the baggage car and three passenger cars derailed on the slope between Laranjeiras and Riachuelo, near Engenho Pedrinhas at kilometer 458.

consequences

Most of the victims were crushed in the car . Many corpses were so mutilated that they could no longer be identified . The train crew fled the scene of the accident because relatives and travelers threatened to lynch it .
