Humpata is a district (Município) in the Angolan province of Huíla , near the provincial capital Lubango . It lies at an altitude of 1020 meters on the Humpata plateau between the Serra da Munda in the north and the Serra da Chela in the south on the Kunene tributary Kakulovar (Caculevar), which descends from the Serra de Chela .

history

Humpata was founded in 1880 by Boer settlers ( Dorsland trekkers ) from South Africa and Portuguese colonists from Moçâmedes instead of a Humbe village after the Boers drove the Humbe out. The Portuguese colonial administration gave the branch the name São Januário in 1881 . The approximately 270 Boers, originally managed by Jacobus Frederik Botha, operated agriculture, cattle breeding and hunting. Some moved on in 1885 and founded the Republic of Upingtonia around Grootfontein in South West Africa . Those who stayed behind initially did not pay any taxes to the Portuguese government, which granted them independent administration and Portuguese citizenship. Botha became magistrate and commandant of the settlement. Botha's daughter married the Portuguese officer Artur de Paiva , and the Boers helped him put down three Humbe revolts until 1898. The Boers from Humpata also helped the Portuguese colonial power to overthrow the Cuamato (Kwamato) and "pacify" the province of Cunene until 1906. Disappointed that Portugal did not allow them to teach their children in Afrikaans , most Boers (between 1800 and 1900 people) left Humpata in 1928 and settled in South West Africa.

With the independence of Angola in 1975, the city was given its old name Humpata back and today has around 31,000 inhabitants.
