Artur de Paiva

Artur de Paiva (born March 9, 1856 ; died September 1, 1900 ) was a Portuguese military man who had participated in many Portuguese expeditions to Angola since 1875 . He achieved the rank of colonel ( coronel ). In his honor, today's village of Cuvango in Angola was named Vila Artur de Paiva during colonial times . He was posthumously appointed Grande-Oficial ( Grand Officer ) of the Ordem do Império . The Portuguese colonial historian Manuel Múrias lists Artur de Paiva Couceiro in a “series of chosen men” who “at the best of times” in the history of Portugal “not only carried out the occupation, but also laid the foundations for overseas administration”.
