Cuvango (also Kuvango , before 1975 Vila da Ponte ) is a small town and a district in Angola .

history

The place was founded by Portuguese settlers at the end of the 19th century as Vila Artur de Paiva . The name made reference to Artur de Paiva (1856-1900), an officer who has made a name for himself in the military operations to enforce Portuguese colonial rule . The small town ( Vila ) was later named Vila da Ponte , referring to the important bridge over the Cubango . After the country gained independence in 1975, the small town abandoned the Portuguese place name and has since been known as it is today.

administration

Cuvango is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Huíla . The district covers an area of 9680 km² with around 67,000 inhabitants (2012 estimate). From now on, the 2014 census should provide reliable population data.

The Cuvango district is made up of three municipalities (Comunas):

economy

The district is strongly characterized by agriculture. The main crop is maize. In 1970, under Portuguese colonial administration , rice production began here, which did not fall below 60 tons per harvest until 1984. Due to the escalation of the Angolan civil war (1975-2002), rice was no longer cultivated. Since 2006 rice has been grown again in Cuvango . Since the peace treaty in 2002 and the government's subsequent reconstruction programs, the district has experienced some economic boom. The Namibebahn , which was gradually put back into operation from 2010, and the restored road connection, particularly to Lubango , provided important impetus. Since the end of 2013, the district has had one of the five grain bases in the province of Huíla, with two silos with a capacity of 500 tons each, drying and treatment systems, logistics facilities and a laboratory center.

In addition, livestock farming is playing an increasing role in the district. The local government promotes cattle breeding in the district through vaccination programs and cattle distribution.

In 2012, the Angolan company Ali-Terra announced the establishment of various industrial plants in the industrial park (port. Pólo industrial ) Cuvangos. These include an animal feed factory, a ceramic factory, two plants for the production of vegetable oil and soap, and a bottling plant for mineral water. There is also a poultry farm and a pig breeding business. A hotel with 24 beds was also announced, as well as possible orchards with 7,500 trees. The company justified its commitment with the favorable soil quality and the sufficient water resources in the district.

Cuvango County has several natural resources, including diamonds, gold, silver, quartz, iron and manganese.

traffic

Cuvango has a train station on the Namibebahn railway line. The line has been fully operational again since 2012 after it came to a standstill during the civil war (1975-2002).

The asphalt national road from Moçâmedes (1985-2016 Namibe ) on the Atlantic coast via Lubango , Matala and Cuvango to Menongue has been completed since 2012 . Before that, a number of bridge repairs and new buildings were necessary, including the important bridge over the Cubango in the Cuvango district.
