history

Caconda became the seat of its own district in 1857 and was raised to a small town ( Vila ).

The Portuguese zoologist and naturalist José Alberto de Oliveira Anchieta (1832-1897) spent part of his research in Caconda, where he described numerous animal species, especially birds , but also amphibians , reptiles and mammals . He sent his collections and descriptions to the zoologist José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage , who coordinated and published them in the Natural History Museum in Lisbon.

Culture

The architectural monuments of Caconda include the remains of the Portuguese fortress Fortaleza de Caconda and the Igreja de Caconda church, built in 1956 .

As part of the state funding programs for rural development and the fight against hunger, the mayor of Cacondas, Adão Sebastião César, announced the construction of the city library in April 2014, a construction costing 20 million kwanzas (around 150,000 euros ). The building will have a book room for 2,000 books and a computer room next to the administrative section. During her visit to Caconda, the culture minister Rosa Cruz e Silva had already promised the delivery of 1,000 books by her ministry.

Caconda is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Huíla . The district has an area of ​​4715 km² and around 220,000 inhabitants (2014 estimate). The 2014 census is now to provide accurate population data.
