Bioče railway accident
In the railway accident in Bioče on January 23, 2006, a train of the Montenegrin Railway derailed on the Belgrade – Bar line near Bioče in Montenegro due to excessive speed after a failure of the braking system. 45 people died.
Starting position
A four-part railcars of series 412 of the Montenegrin Railways had problems with its brakes. Nevertheless, it was used as a local train from Bijelo Polje to Bar . It carried around 300 passengers on the accident trip . The engine driver was still able to brake properly 700 meters before the scene of the accident .
The railway line runs underneath Bioče station on a winding slope through a series of tunnels .
the accident
The train accelerated uncontrollably on a downward slope around 4 p.m. and broke out of an arc at the end of a tunnel at 139 km / h instead of the permitted 60 km / h. The train derailed at the 100 meter deep Morača gorge , into which part of the train fell. The result of the official investigation was that the brakes had failed.
consequences
45 people died and 184 were injured. This was the worst railway accident that had ever occurred in Montenegro. The rescue work was hampered by difficult to access terrain, strong winds and blowing snow.
The engineer was on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter in custody taken. He was aware that the brakes had a technical defect. He, in turn, stated that he reported this without any repairs being carried out. On July 23, 2006, the Podgorica Prosecutor's Office brought charges against twelve railway employees. All but the engine driver were acquitted. He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment. The public opinion regarded the ruling as a maneuver to divert attention from the structural deficits of the Montenegrin railway.
The accident led to the resignation of Transport Minister Andrija Lompar and the director of the railway, Ranko Medenica , on the evening of the day of the accident.
