Kurawan Railway Accident
In the harda twin train derailment derailed on 4 August 2015 two different fast trains at the station Kurawan in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . 31 people died.
Starting position
Heavy monsoons led to flooding in the region where the accident occurred, and the waters led to flooding. The area of the accident site is on the electrified Khandwa – Itarsi line of Indian Railways . A bridge crosses the Machak River here . There were well over 300 passengers on the trains .
The Kamayani Express , en route from Mumbai to Varanasi and the Janata Express , en route in the opposite direction between Patna and Mumbai, traveled the route.
the accident
In the area of the bridge, the water masses had softened the embankment , and according to some reports the bridge itself was also flooded. Ten minutes before the accident, another train had passed the area without incident. The Zugspitze of the Kamayani Express also still drove over the passage. While the railways and the railway minister assumed a flash flood that damaged the embankment, and reports of a breach of the dam near the scene of the accident that had caused the flash flood, which turned out to be inapplicable, the railroad engineers assumed that it would slowly sink Embankment, which could have been noticed in good time with adequate monitoring of the track.
First the seven rear wagons of the Janata Express derailed here around 11:30 p.m. A few minutes later, the Kamayani Express drove on the track in the opposite direction and derailed its locomotive and three carriages, some overturned, some fell into the water.
consequences
31 people died, two of them during rescue attempts through the not yet earthed overhead line . About 100 were also injured. 900 meters of the route were damaged.
Local help came after about 30 minutes, and the official rescue workers arrived after two hours. The rescue work proved difficult as it had to be started without lighting. About 300 travelers were taken away from the scene of the accident.
