Qaliub railway accident

The Qalyub railway accident was a rear-end collision in which two trains collided on August 21, 2006 near the Egyptian city ​​of Qalyub . 58 people were killed.

Starting position

Two heavily frequented commuter trains of the Egyptian State Railways , one from Banha and one from al-Mansura , drove south, towards Cairo, in the morning rush hour . The train from Banha stopped at the entry signal of the station of Qalyub, 20 km north of Cairo .

the accident

The train from Mansura was also approaching Qalyub station at around 80 km / h and due to a fault in the signaling system, it hit the stopping train from Banha. Four passenger cars on the train derailed and overturned, as did the locomotive of the train from Mansura. The train from Banha began to burn.

consequences

58 people died, including the engine driver of the train from Mansura, 140 were injured.

Hanafi Abdel Qawi , director of the Egyptian State Railways , was dismissed due to the accident . 14 employees of the railway company were charged with grossly negligent behavior and sentenced to prison terms for failing to repair the defective signal system.
