Starting position

The Rápido No. 8012 of the Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses (CP) was on the Linha do Sul from Vila Real de Santo António to Barreiro . The train left Vila Real de Santo António at 1:13 p.m. It was pulled by the steam locomotive 559, a 2C1 from Henschel & Sohn , which was followed by a tender , three 3rd class passenger cars , a dining car and two 1st class cars . All of the cars were made by Budd and had steel bodies. Many of the travelers were young people returning from vacation.

the accident

Between the stations Santa Clara-a-Velha and Pereiras-Gare joined train kilometers a 261.428 km rail break on. The place was in a cut in the terrain in a curve. In addition, it was found after the accident that the wheel flanges of the locomotive were heavily worn. When the train passed the point on the track at almost 90 km / h at around 4:15 p.m. , the locomotive derailed, was carried out of the curve, tipped into the ditch on the embankment and also derailed the three following 3rd class cars. Due to the mass of the pushing train, the two front passenger cars , which ran directly behind the locomotive, were crushed between the locomotive and the train and pushed into one another. The following cars stopped on the track.

consequences

More than 29 people died in the accident and more than 50 were injured.

Since the scene of the accident was lonely, travelers had to walk to the two neighboring train stations to trigger the alarm. It was three hours before a relief train arrived. The injured were taken by train to Beja and by road to Portimão , where they did not arrive until around midnight. The dead were temporarily laid out in the church of Santa Clara-Savoie. The remaining travelers continued their journey in a replacement train and reached Lisbon around 5 a.m. the next day.
