El Tatio
The El Tatio volcano is located in Chile in the Región de Antofagasta and is part of the Andes east of the Atacama Desert . The crater is at approx. 4280 m .
Geothermal area
At the foot of the volcanic crater there is a geothermal area with geysers and hot springs. Like Sol de Mañana, it belongs to the Altiplano-Puna volcanic region. Of 110 erupting springs, more than 80 have been identified as real geysers, of which over 30 are continuously active. It is the largest geyser field in the southern hemisphere and, after those in Yellowstone National Park and Dolina Geiserow in Russia, it is the third largest in the world. An estimated 8% of the world's geysers are located here. The water temperature is 86 ° C.
tourism
From San Pedro de Atacama there is an accessible ascent option to the volcanic crater. In the geothermal area, tourists are warned of possible scalds and should not climb over the walls that have been built for safety. There is a bathing pool in which hot and cold water flow together. The warm air rising from the geysers can be seen most clearly at frosty temperatures of down to −20 ° C.
