El tranvía al Puerto ( Spanish for 'tram to the port') was a tram that ran in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria between 1890 and 1937 . It was also the first means of rail transport in the Canary Islands .

history

On October 1, 1890, the meter-gauge steam tram was put into operation on the approximately six-kilometer stretch of Calle Carnicerias (today: Calle de Mendizábal ) - Triana - León y Castillo - Puerto ('port'). An extension of the route to La Luz was approved three years later.

As locomotives two were initially steam locomotives of the Bavarian Locomotivfabriken Krauss & Comp. A third Krauss engine was added later, as well as another steam locomotive from the English manufacturer Falcon. In 1910, the steam-powered vehicles were exchanged for electric locomotives .

In 1937 the tram was discontinued and replaced by public city buses ( Guaguas Municipales ).
