Elattarchus archidium ( English bluestreak drum - blue stripe drummer ) is the only species of the genus Elattarchus fromthe Umberfische family (Sciaenidae). The species occurs on the tropical Pacific coast from California to Peru , namely in the Sea of Cortes and around the Galapagos .

features

Elattarchus archidium is a small fish up to 25 centimeters long. The trunk is moderately elongated and laterally flattened and of a silvery color with a blue-gray back. Often there are dark stripes running along the rows of scales, young animals have two black longitudinal stripes on the upper half of the body and a black spot at the base of the caudal fin. There are 47 to 56 scales along the sidelines . Under the blunt snout sits a terminal mouth with hanging angles. In the upper jaw, the first of the two to three rows of teeth is enlarged. The front of the lower jaw, which is black, crescent-shaped, has two noticeably enlarged teeth. The chin has five pores and no barbels . The preoperkulum ends in five to seven spines. The gill trap has 19 to 25 thorns, 13 to 18 of them on the lower arch.

The front part of the dorsal fin has ten hard rays and is dark at the edge, the rear has one or two hard rays and 24 to 28 soft rays. The caudal fin has a straight edge. The pectoral and anal fin are transparent to yellowish, the anal fin has two hard rays, the second of which is long and thin and 8 or 9 soft rays.

Way of life

Elattarchus archidium inhabits shallow coastal waters at depths of two to 50 meters. The species is often found on sandy beaches or in sheltered bays, less often in estuaries. The juveniles form larger groups near rocky reefs. Zooplankton serves as food .

Scientific name

Meaning: from Greek: elatton "weaker", archos "ass": because of the weak anal fin spines; archidion "lower rank in an office" (from archos "head" - the blue stripe interpreted as a badge of rank in an official hierarchy).
