Elbert Alonzo Root (born July 20, 1915 in Charleston , South Carolina , † July 15, 1983 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American water diver who took part in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin .
After Root was able to win the silver medal from the 10-meter board behind his compatriot Marshall Wayne at the Olympic Games in Berlin , he worked successfully as a jumper in the Amateur Athletic Union for two years . After that, Root earned his living by participating in Billy Rose's Aquacade , a dance and music show organized by the namesake Billy Rose .
After enrolling on January 27, 1943, he served in the US Marine Corps during World War II and served in the military until the early 1950s.
