geography

Elbing , the Nogat flowing into the Fresh Lagoon and the Elbinger Höhe northeast of the city on a map from 1910

The Elbinger Niederung, excluding the Fresh Lagoon, is an area of around 300 square kilometers in the large Vistula Delta . During the time of the Teutonic Order , it was cultivated under the supervision of the Elbing Commandery and was later administered from the city of Elbing.

The area is referred to as a lowland not only because it is consistently flat and has only very minor elevations and subsidence compared to the level of the Nogat, but also because it is geographically different from the rest of the Elbinger Höhe , one of them in the northeast adjoining hilly landscape, also called Trunzer Berge . Before the rivers of the Nogat and the Vistula were regulated with the help of dams between 1288 and 1295, the Elbinger Niederung was a swamp area.

The part of the Elbinger Niederung beyond the Nogat is also known as Elbinger Werder (also Elbingsches Werder). In the north-west of Elbing the Elbinger Niederung extends to the confluence of the Elbinger Vistula in the Fresh Lagoon, in the south to the Drausensee . (Polish: Druzno )

History

On the east bank of the Nogat, the Teutonic Order built the Clementsburg Castle, which was conquered by the Prussians in 1273, near the village of Clemensfähre, southwest of Elbing . In the 17th century, the Clemens Ferry fortress existed here , which was destroyed during the Northern Wars.

Before the former wetland was drained in the late 13th century, it was only sparsely populated. In the course of its reclamation and cultivation, numerous villages emerged, some of which were later incorporated into the city of Elbing.
