Elbow River in the Bow River basin

The Elbow River ( English elbow for elbow ) is a 120 km long river in the Canadian province of Alberta .

geography

The Elbow River rises from Elbow Lake at Elbow Pass in the Canadian Rockies . This is fed , among other things, by the Rae Glacier on Mount Rae , 3218  m high . Shortly before it flows into the Bow River in Calgary , the Elbow River is dammed into the Glenmore Reservoir .

The length of 120 kilometers results in an average gradient of almost one percent from the source at more than 2100 meters above sea level to the mouth at a good 1000 meters .

Flood 2013

In June 2013, heavy rains in Alberta caused flooding on numerous rivers. The Elbow River, together with the Bow River, flooded large parts of Calgary, 75,000 residents had to leave their homes. Near the town of Bragg Creek , the flow rate of the Elbow River reached at least 513 m³ / s. This significantly exceeded the value of the flood of 2005, which was already considered a 100-year flood (308 m³ / s).
