The Elbe Shipping Museum is located at Elbstrasse 59 in Lauenburg / Elbe , Schleswig-Holstein . It is dedicated to shipping on the Elbe from Bohemia to Hamburg .

history

The Lauenburg Elbe Shipping Museum has existed since 1926 and was converted into a supra-regional Elbe Shipping Museum in 1960. The aim of this museum, located in the old town of Lauenburg, is to present the historical development of Elbe shipping. The development of shipping on the Elbe is presented with models, showcases and original exhibits. So z. B. the chain shipping on the Elbe is documented with models and explanations.

The museum was renovated and restored between 2010 and 2011. A new intermediate building was created that connects the historical parts of the building with one another. The construction costs amounted to 2.6 million euros.

Exhibits

In the lower part of the listed museum building (the former town hall of the city) is the "treasure chamber of ship drives". Ship engines from 1850 to the present are displayed here in intense blue lighting. Their function is partially demonstrated with the help of electric motors. The exhibits include a cut-open ship's steam boiler for coal firing, four steam engines, a steam turbine, a glow-head motor with a flywheel, two small diesel engines and a Junkers opposed piston motor, a paddle wheel with eccentric and movable blades, a riveted propeller and a Voith Schneider propeller . The collection is unique in Germany of its kind.

With changing exhibitions and lectures, ship-related topics, predominantly on inland navigation, are regularly dealt with. Of particular scientific importance is the shipping archive with historical photos, specialist journals and books on Central European inland navigation, which also contains around 25,000 technical drawings.

The paddle steamer Kaiser Wilhelm , which is part of the museum as a floating exhibit, is operated and maintained by the “Association for the Promotion of the Lauenburg Elbe Shipping Museum”.

Elbe shipping archive

The "Association for the Promotion of the Lauenburg Elbe Shipping Museum" maintains the Elbe Shipping Archive, one of the most important non-governmental archives on the history of inland navigation in the Elbe area.

In addition to around 50,000 technical drawings from various inland shipping yards and around 5,000 other archival materials, there is a specialist library with around 8,000 books and volumes of journals available for research.
