Eldar Schengelaia ( Georgian ელდარ შენგელაია ; born January 26, 1933 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian film producer and politician ( National Movement - Democrats ). From 1995 to 2004 he was Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia.

Life

Nikolos Schengelaia's son graduated from the film production department of the Moscow Cinematographic Institute in 1958 . From 1957 to 1960 he worked for Mosfilm Studios. There his first film was made, a fairy tale film based on Wilhelm Hauff , Legenda o ledjanom serdze (German: The fairy tale of the cold heart ).

In 1960 he switched to the Kartuli Film Studios in Tbilisi as a producer . He made a name for himself in 1973 with the feature film Scherekilebi (dt. Nerds ). It was about strange owls, their seemingly impossible ideas and dreams. The films Tetri karavani (German White Caravan , 1963), Arachveulebrivi gamopena (German An unusual exhibition , 1968) and Tsisperi mtebi anu arachveulebrivi ambavi (German Blue Mountains or an improbable story , 1984) also came to German cinemas. Schengelaia later teaches as a professor at the newly founded Georgian Film School.

From 1976 to 1991 he was first secretary of the cinematographers union , from 1991 its chairman. 1980 to 1985 and he was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Georgian SSR, from 1989 to 1991 of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union .

When Georgia became independent, he was a member of parliament from 1990 to 1992, joined the Georgian government, the State Council, after the coup against President Sviad Gamsakhurdia in 1992, and was chairman of the cultural commission until 1995. He has been a member of parliament since 1995. He is a member of the parliamentary committee on education, science, culture and sport. Until 2004 he was also deputy speaker of parliament.

In 1993 Schengelaia co-founded the Georgian Citizens' Union party , which President Eduard Shevardnadze supported. In 2003 he joined the United Democrats of Zurab Schwanias , supported the rose revolution in Georgia and coined the term that had become internationally popular in November. Today he belongs to the National Movement - Democrats , whose chairman is President Mikheil Saakashvili .

Schengelaia produced many films, several of which have won awards at Soviet and international film festivals.

Schengelaia is married and has three daughters: Natalia, Katerina, and Helena. The director Giorgi Schengelaia is his brother.
