Giorgi Schengelaia

Giorgi Schengelaia (born May 11, 1937 in Tbilisi , † February 17, 2020 ) was a Georgian film director .

life and work

Giorgi Schengelaia was a Georgian film director and writer . His parents were Nato Watschnadze , a legendary Georgian actress during the silent movie era , and Nikolos Schengelaia , a pioneer of Georgian cinematography . His brother is the film producer Eldar Schengelaia .

The feature film Pirosmani is the most famous film by Giorgi Schengelaia. Schengelaia made a documentary in 1969 about the life of the Georgian folk painter Pirosmani , which won first prize at the 1972 Chicago International Film Festival .

Schengelaia has worked as a director, author and producer in numerous films and took part in documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977 .
