Eleanor Sharpston

Eleanor Sharpston QC (* 1955 ) is a British lawyer . She has been Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg since 2006 .

Life

Sharpston grew up in Brazil and continental Europe and then studied economics , languages and law at King's College of the University of Cambridge from 1973 to 1977 . In 1977 she went to Corpus Christi College at the University of Oxford , where she researched and taught interdisciplinary in the field of economics and law until 1980. In 1980 she was in the Bar Association of the Middle Temple as a barrister admitted and practiced in this role from 1980 to 1987 in Brussels and from 1990 to 2005 London . In the meantime, from 1987 to 1990 she was legal advisor to Gordon Slynn, Baron Slynn of Hadley , who initially worked as an advocate general and from 1988 as a judge at the European Court of Justice.

In addition, Sharpston remained connected to the academic career. From 1990 to 1992 she taught European and comparative law at University College London and from 1992 to 2005 at the University of Cambridge. She has been a Fellow of King's College since 1992 and was a Senior Research Fellow at the Center for European Legal Studies at the University of Cambridge from 1998 to 2005 . Sharpston is a member of the Irish and Gibraltar Bar Associations .

Since January 11, 2006, she has held the position of Advocate General at the European Court of Justice.

In 2019 Sharpston was elected an honorary member of the British Academy .
