Elei Sinai

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elei Sinai ( Hebrew אֱלֵי סִינַי) "Off to Sinai" was one of three Israeli settlements on the northern edge of the Gaza Strip . Together with the settlements of Dugit and Nisanit, it formed a closed area of Israeli settlements and bordered the Mediterranean in the northwest. In the south, the settlements bordered the Palestinian city of Atrata .

history

Reception camp for settlers from Elei Sinai near Jad Mordechai

The Gaza Strip was militarily occupied by Israel in 1967. Elei Sinai was founded in 1982 (according to the Jewish calendar in Sukkot 5743) by a group of Jewish settlers who came from Jamit in the northeast of the Sinai Peninsula . Jamit had been evacuated when Sinai was returned to Egypt in 1982 under the Israel-Egyptian Peace Treaty of 1979.

Several attacks by Palestinian militants were carried out between 2001 and 2004.

In an attack by two heavily armed terrorists by the radical Islamic group Hamas on October 2, 2001, two young Israelis were shot dead and another 15 injured, some seriously. The perpetrators used firearms and also threw several hand grenades. On December 2, 2001, one Israeli was shot dead and four others injured, some seriously.

In 2004 the Israeli government announced that as part of Israel's unilateral disengagement plan, all Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip, including Elei Sinai, would be dismantled. Implementation of the plan began on August 15, 2005. A group of Israeli settlers said they were ready to become Palestinian citizens in order to stay in Elei Sinai. However, this idea has been rejected by the Palestinian and Israeli governments alike. In the course of the evacuation of the Gaza Strip, the Elei Sinai settlement was finally abandoned on August 21, 2005, later destroyed by the Israeli forces and handed over to the Palestinians on September 12, 2005.

The kibbutzim Karmia and Ohr HaNer were founded by the evacuated residents near Askalon . One of the groups asked to plant a church in the center of the country. In 2006 the government agreed to host the group in Palmachim .
