The electricity company of the canton of Schaffhausen (EKS), based in Schaffhausen, is a Swiss energy supply company that supplies around 110,000 people in the canton of Schaffhausen and the neighboring German areas with electricity.
history
In 1908 the voters of the canton of Schaffhausen approved the establishment of an electricity company, an energy supply company that was supposed to bring electricity to the furthest corners of the canton. The municipalities of Schaffhausen and Hallau already had their own factories. As everywhere in the region, the first electricity plants were built by private individuals and municipalities. The primary task of the EKS was to set up a distribution network quickly. This only happened through power lines laid above ground. The power supply was provided by hydropower plants. Own power plants were considered. But in 1914 Schaffhausen and other cantons founded the Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke (NOK), which produced electricity. Since then, the EKS has been a pure distribution plant. In the 1950s, the demand for electricity grew rapidly. New settlement areas required new lines, increased voltage and additional substations . At the same time, the landscape was optimized by laying power lines underground.
EKS has been a stock corporation since 2000, with the Canton of Schaffhausen holding 75% and EKT Holding AG 15%.
Systems in Germany
EKS also operates at least one line in Germany, namely the line from Thayngen to the Rielasingen substation (Germany) to the Schlattingen substation (Switzerland).
Products
Systems that substitute fossil fuels and thus avoid CO 2 emissions are funded. The new renewable energies are given special consideration in the production and procurement strategy of EKS AG. EKS understands new renewable energies as geothermal, biogas, biomass, wind, photovoltaics and small hydropower plants. In 2008 EKS launched the natural electricity exchange. It is an online platform for natural electricity from the region. This idea has meanwhile been adopted by the cantons of Thurgau , St. Gallen and Appenzell .
A special feature of the EKS is the delivery of electricity to neighboring German areas. The 'FORMAT' department, managed by EKS as a lighting competence center in 2007, offers not only a designer lighting specialist shop but also home advice for private individuals.
