The Elektroamt Berlin was a service company of the East Berlin magistrate until 1990 . His tasks included the maintenance and repair of lighting systems in representative buildings, especially in the (East Berlin) city center. These included, for example, the headlights of the Berlin television tower , the Humboldt University , the Berolinahaus and the State Opera. The illumination of the Brandenburg Gate was also looked after by employees of the electrical department. A special permit from the border troops or the state security was required for these activities , as the work involved was in the immediate border area with West Berlin .

A select group of employees from the electrical department was also responsible for maintaining the lighting systems on the Soviet memorial on Strasse des 17. Juni in West Berlin. The persons authorized to do so were provided with a business passport for the duration of their assignment in the western part of Berlin.

In addition, the electrical office had a department for communications technology, looked after telecommunications technology and medical technology, various Berlin hospitals and was responsible for the maintenance of fire alarm technology in social institutions, such as the so-called after-work homes. Another area of work was the public clocks in Berlin. These often had the inscription "Elektroamt" on the dial with the Berlin city coat of arms above it. The electrical department was regularly mentioned in the daily press when the employees carried out work on the public clocks on the nights of the changeover to summer or winter time.

Until 1982 the company was based in Berlin-Mitte, Charlottenstrasse 55. From 1982 onwards, it was located at Storkower Strasse 139 c in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg . Manfred Beitke was the director until 1990.

In the course of monetary, economic and social union and the privatization of GDR companies, the electrical office was taken over by Siemens Private Kommunikationssysteme Vertriebs GmbH in mid-1990 and the range of tasks was limited to the telecommunications sector.
