Eleanor of Normandy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eleanor of Normandy (* before 1017) was a daughter of Duke Richard II of Normandy († 1027) and Judith of Bretagne († 1017). After 1030 she married Baldwin IV of Flanders, who was about 30 years her senior, after his first wife Otgiva of Luxembourg († 1030) died. Baldwin died in 1035.

The only known child from their marriage is Judith von Flandern († 1094), who first married Toste Godwinsson , from 1055 Earl of Northumbria (X 1066), and in her second marriage Welf IV. , 1070 Duke of Bavaria († 1101). Baldwin and Eleonore as Judith's parents was controversial for a long time, but should now be considered recognized. Through Judith's second marriage, Eleonore is the great-great-grandmother of both Friedrich Barbarossa and Heinrich the Lion .

Contrary to the usual name, it is not certain that her real name was Eleanor, as the primary sources that concern her do not mention her name:

  • Her name is not mentioned in the Genealogica Comitum Flandriæ ; in footnote 19 on p. 307 of the MGH edition it is given as "Alienoram" without the source for this statement being noted.
  • In his statements about the year 1066, the Annalista Saxo describes Judith's mother as "cognatione beati Ethmundi regis", relatives of the blessed King Edmund († 946), without giving her name.
  • Even William of Jumièges not call her name when he talks about her marriage to Baldwin, but rather that of their parents.
