The ivory lichen bear ( Cybosia mesomella ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the subfamily of the bear moth (Arctiinae).

features

The moths have a wingspan of around 40 millimeters. The forewings are ivory white with a light yellow border and yellow fringes. There are two small, characteristic dark spots on them. The hind wings also have yellow fringes, but are otherwise gray.

Similar species

Occurrence

They occur throughout Europe , except in parts of the Iberian Peninsula , east to the Urals . They live in alluvial and bog forests , on bog meadows and peat banks and on the edges of forests with many bushes.

Flight and caterpillar times

The ivory lichen bear flies in one generation from May to mid-August. The young caterpillars appear from August, overwinter and can be observed from May the following year.

Way of life

The caterpillars hatch in August. They overwinter and pupate in May in a light web between lichens . They eat lichen and liverworts . During the day, the caterpillars hide in dry leaves or in the cracks of the bark of oaks.
