Elfriede Blaickner (born September 21, 1904 in Imst as Elfriede Bitschnau ; † May 31, 2001 in Feldkirch ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) as well as elementary and secondary school teacher. From 1959 to 1974 she was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament .

education and profession

Blaickner attended the elementary school Feldkirch and then graduated from the teacher training college in Innsbruck, where she acquired the teaching qualification for elementary schools in 1926. She also attended an apprenticeship at the University Clinic Vienna as a course leader for hygiene, child and nursing care and in 1930 also passed the examination for the teaching qualification for secondary schools in the subjects of German, geography and history. In a special examination, she also acquired the qualification to teach mathematics and natural history.

Blaickner worked as a primary school teacher in Altenstadt, Bregenz and Gurtis between 1924 and 1927 and then worked as a hiking teacher and course instructor for two weeks in various Vorarlberg towns from 1927 to 1930. She then taught as a secondary school teacher in Dornbirn between 1930 and 1935, and after her marriage and the birth of her children after 1945, she was active as a speaker at bridal meetings, youth groups, women's meetings and parents' evenings. In 1952 she returned to the service as a teacher and was employed at the Feldkirch secondary school. During the time of her political activities, she held half a teaching position or was released from teaching.

Politics and functions

In local politics, Blaickner was initially involved as a substitute member of the Feldkirch municipal council from 1950 to 1954, after which she was a member of the municipal council from 1954 to 1959 and from 1965 to 1973. She was also a member of the Feldkirch local school council and a member of the ÖVP city party leadership in Feldkirch. She was a member of the Austrian People's Party and also active in the Austrian Women's Movement (ÖFB) and in the ÖAAB , where she was the country leader of the Austrian women's movement from 1966 to 1977, member of the federal management of the women's department in the ÖAAB and until 1972 the regional women's officer of the ÖAAB Vorarlberg. In addition, she worked from 1960 as a member of the state group committee of the ÖAAB and was a member of the state party council of the ÖVP Vorarlberg from 1959 to 1969 . She was also a member of the state party leadership from 1959 to 1977 and a member of the state party presidium of the ÖVP Vorarlberg from 1966 to 1977.

As a member of the Feldkirch constituency, she represented the ÖVP between October 29, 1959 and October 20, 1974. She was the first female member of the state parliament in Vorarlberg alongside the SPÖ member Anna Mayr . After leaving the state parliament, Blaickner was regional chairman of the Vorarlberg Seniors 'Union and chairwoman of the Feldkirch Seniors' Union from 1976 to 1996.

Private

Blaikner was born as the daughter of the public prosecutor at the Feldkirch regional court, Hans Bitschnau (1872–1962) and his wife Ida (1879–1952), née Mallaun. In 1935 she married the bank clerk Alfred Blaickner (1897–1980). Blaikner had three sons (born in 1936, 1938 and 1940).
