Elias III. (Jerusalem)

Elias III. († probably October 4, 906 or 907 ) was Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem from about 878 until his death .

Life

His name was originally Elias ibn Manṣūr , he was the brother of the Patriarch Sergios I. As Synkellos Elias he was 869/870 participant in the fourth ecumenical council of Constantinople .

Around 878 he became Patriarch of Jerusalem. In 881 he sent a letter to the Frankish King Charles III. with a request for support in the rebuilding of the churches in Jerusalem that were destroyed by Muslims. Correspondence (including medical advice) is said to have existed with the English king Alfred the Great .

Elias probably died on October 4th, 906, according to other sources, not until the year 907.
