Elias von Křenowitz
Elias of Křenowitz (also Elias of Křenovice ; Elias of Chřenovice ; Elias of Krschenow ; Elias of Krzenow ; Czech Eliáš Křenovský also Eliáš Chřenovský ; latin Elias Chrzenovius ; * in Křenowitz ; † 1503 in Prostějov ) one of the first Priest was of the Unity of Bohemian brothers . Since he was entrusted with episcopal duties, he was consenior from 1467 and from 1499 until his death in 1503 bishop ( senior ) of the brotherhood.
Life
Elias von Křenowitz was a miller by profession. As a supporter of the Bohemian Brothers, he was elected on March 26, 1467 at the Brothers Synod in Lhotka near Reichenau in a lottery process together with the farmer's son Matthias von Kunwald and the tailor Thomas von Přelouč († 1518) as a priest of the Brethren. As it was decided at the synod, among other things, that the three elected should also be ordained priests, the Brotherhood sent three already ordained priests, of whom only Michael von Žamberk is known, to the Waldensian bishop Stephanus, who was hidden in Austria . He ordained these three priests as bishops of the Brethren Union. Then they returned to Kunwald.
After their return, Michael von Žamberk, who held the position of senior, ordained Elias von Křenowitz, Thomas von Přelouč and Matthias von Kunwald as priests, with Matthias then also receiving the episcopal ordination. The priests Elias and Thomas also performed episcopal functions, but, unlike Matthias, they were not allowed to consecrate newly elected priests . While Thomas was responsible for the Brethren parishes in Moravia , Elias was given responsibility for the scattered parishes in western Bohemia. The focus of his work was Lenešice | Leneschitz, whereby he was also responsible for the brothers in and around Prague, as no brotherhood was allowed to be established there.
Through the election and ordination of own priests and the rejection of compacts , the remaining ties to the utraquist church were consciously broken. Since the Utraquists saw their existence endangered by this, the Brethren Union was subjected to renewed persecution, which continued until the death of King George of Podebrady in 1471. Under his successor Vladislav II the persecutions subsided. The Bohemian Brothers were persecuted again from 1481 under Matthias Corvinus . Since he ruled over Moravia, most of the Bohemian brothers were expelled from there. They went to the Principality of Moldova , where they were welcomed by the voivod Ștefan cel Mare . There they were visited by Elias von Křenowitz after the death of King Matthias Corvinus . After his return, Elias was elected bishop or senior of the brotherhood in 1499. Four years later he died in Prostějov.
