Elisabeth Järnefelt

Elisabeth Järnefelt (born Elisabeth Clodt von Jürgensburg ; born January 11, 1839 in Saint Petersburg , † February 3, 1929 in Helsinki ) was an important patron of Finnish art and culture.

Life

Coming from the Baltic noble family of the Clodt von Jürgensburg , she was niece of the sculptor Peter Clodt von Jürgensburg and sister of the painter Michail Clodt von Jürgensburg . In 1858 she married General August Alexander Järnefelt , with whom she went to Finland. Here she gathered a circle of young people interested in literature and art, including her own children, the translator and literary critic Kasper Järnefelt , the writer Arvid Järnefelt , the painter Eero Järnefelt and the composer Armas Järnefelt , Juhani Aho and Heikki Kauppinen and for for a time also belonged to Minna Canth .

In this "Järnefelt School" she introduced the ideas of Lev Tolstoy and Belinski's art theories into Finnish literature. Järnefelt is known as the "mother of Finnish art and culture". Their daughter Aino was married to the Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius .
