Elisabeth Labrousse

Elisabeth Labrousse (born January 10, 1914 in Paris ; † February 1, 2000 there ) was a French religious historian and philosopher .

Life

Elisabeth Labrousse's career began in 1947 as a teacher of the history of philosophy at the University of Tucumán in Argentina. In 1952 she received a scholarship from Descartes House in Amsterdam, where she worked on the historical-critical edition of Pierre Bayle's correspondence . In 1955 she was appointed to the CNRS (Center National des Recherches Scientifiques) and did her doctorate there in 1964 under Henri Gouhier on Pierre Bayle.

She was internationally recognized as an expert on the history of French Protestantism , received honorary doctorates from the Institute for Protestant Theology at the University of Paris, from the Universities of Geneva, Oxford and St Hilda's College Oxford, and was a Fellow of the American Historical Association .

The first volume of the edition prepared by Pierre Bayles was published in July 1999 (at the Fondation Voltaire). She was able to put together the critical apparatus for the next two volumes. Until her death she worked on the biography of the Swiss Pierre Souverain from the community of Taizé .
