Elisabeth Maria Hajós
Elisabeth Maria Hajós (born January 15, 1900 in Nyíregyháza ; died 1982 ) was a Hungarian-American art historian .
Life
Elisabeth Maria Hajós was the daughter of the lawyer Alexander Hajós. She attended school in Budapest and studied art history, philosophy and literary history in Budapest, Freiburg im Breisgau and Berlin. She received her doctorate in 1924 with Hans Jantzen in Freiburg with the dissertation The Passion Sequence of the Master of Playing Cards in the Kupferstichkabinett in Dresden (Ms.).
Hajós then worked from 1925 to 1928 as an assistant at the graphic collection of the Albertina in Vienna and wrote art reviews. She made research trips in Europe. In 1936 she had a scholarship at the Hungarian Historical Institute in Vienna. In Budapest she worked as a lecturer at the Adult Education Center. Because of anti-Semitism in Hungary and Austria, Hajós emigrated to the USA in 1938.
In 1940/41 she held a visiting professorship at Georgian Court College in the USA, but did not find permanent employment and worked as a freelance art historian and art critic.
