The Master of the Playing Cards , even playing cards Master ( English Master of the Playing Cards ), active around 1425-1450 in the Rhineland, was an anonymous German letter printer , engraver , painter and goldsmith .

The master is named with an emergency name after his main work, a series of playing cards in copper engraving . The oldest (before 1440) engraved card game is ascribed to him. Of the 13 motifs that have been preserved, 65 sheets (three quarters of the deck of cards) are known. A total of 100 engravings are ascribed to him.

The playing card master was the most influential of the first generation of engravers in the mid-15th century. Along with Meister ES and Martin Schongauer, he is one of the most important engravers of the early copper engraving era. In the work of the master, a personal style of a copper engraver can be recognized for the first time, making him the first personality in the history of copper engraving (author's graphic).
