Political career

Zanon was elected to the state government in 1994 as the first woman by the Tyrolean state parliament. From January 3, 2006, Zanon was the first deputy governor and was responsible, among other things, for the areas of health, family, women, youth, senior citizens, integration, employee support and housing subsidies. At the federal party conference of the ÖVP in 1995, Zanon was elected as deputy chairwoman of Wolfgang Schüssel . At the 33rd Ordinary Federal Party Congress on April 21, 2007 in Salzburg, she was re-elected as Deputy Federal Party Leader. In addition, Zanon has been the country leader for Tyrolean women in the People's Party / Tyrolean women's movement since 1995. After the Tyrolean People's Party lost almost 10 percentage points in the state elections on June 8, 2008, Zanon announced on the evening of the election that it would inherit Governor Herwig van Staa in his functions as governor and party leader. When the Tyrolean provincial government was reorganized under the leadership of Governor Günther Platter in July 2008, however, Zanon was no longer given a chance. She took this as an opportunity to announce her departure from politics, to withdraw into private life or to return to work as a doctor. This although it was discussed for a long time that she wanted to switch to federal politics, which she repeatedly refuted. She has also already acted as the successor to Andrea Kdolsky as Federal Minister for Health, Family and Youth.
