Elisabeth of Austria (1526–1545)
Elisabeth of Austria (born June 9, 1526 in Linz , † June 15, 1545 in Vilnius ) from the House of Habsburg was titular queen of Poland .
Life
Elisabeth was the daughter of the future emperor Ferdinand I and his wife Anna of Bohemia and Hungary . Shortly after her birth, she was promised to the Jagiellonian Sigismund II , King of Poland. The wedding took place on May 5, 1543 when Elisabeth was 16 years old.
The marriage did not bring about the hoped-for improvement in relations between the Jagiello and Habsburg houses. Elisabeth found herself between the fronts of the opponents and supporters of Habsburg and she was met with extreme coldness at the Polish court: her mother-in-law Bona Sforza did not accept her and Sigismund developed a physical aversion to her, presumably because she suffered from epileptic fits and could not speak Polish.
She died shortly after her 19th birthday without having given birth. Sigismund later married her sister Katharina of Austria .
