Elizabeth of Cumania

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elisabeth of Cumania (* 1240 , † around 1290) was Queen of Hungary.

Life

Elisabeth was born as the daughter of Kuthen († around 1240), Khan of Cumania (chief of the Kyptschaks ), and his wife, a princess Halitsch. However, according to some historians, your father may have been another Cuman leader.

In 1253, at the age of 13, she was married to Stephan from the Árpáden family , who later became Stephan V , King of Hungary, Croatia, Dalmatia and Rama, who was only a year older than him . The marriage was arranged by Stephen's father, King Béla IV , and was intended to improve relations with the pagan people of the Kyptschaks. Elisabeth was baptized Catholic before marriage, but the couple were still considered semi-pagan. The couple had six children.

After the death of Béla IV († May 3, 1270) Stephan V succeeded him to the throne and his wife Elisabeth became Queen of Hungary. Stephan V ruled for only two years and died on August 6, 1272 at the age of only 33, after which Elisabeth appeared as regent for her ten-year-old son Ladislaus IV. However, it was very unpopular with the Hungarians. She died around 1290 and was buried at the side of her husband in the Dominican monastery of Csepel in Budapest.
