The St. Elisabeth Hospital in Landstraßer Hauptstraße 4a in the 3rd  district of Landstraße is one of the oldest hospitals in Vienna . In 2017 the hospital merged with Hartmannspital to form Franziskus Spital . The Hartmannspital is now operated under the Franziskus Spital Margareten brand , the St. Elisabeth Hospital under the Franziskus Spital Landstrasse brand.

The Elisabethinenkirche is integrated into the building .

history

After the Order of the Elisabethinen came to Vienna in 1709 and bought their own house on Landstraßer Hauptstrasse on March 22, 1710, the hospital attached to the monastery was opened in 1715. In contrast to that of the Brothers of Mercy, this was only open to women who were medically ill. A gynecological department (two rooms and 11 beds) with a total occupancy of 95 beds was only opened around 1900.

Although Emperor Joseph II forbade the admission of novices in 1781 , because of the hospital, the order itself was not revoked. For the self-sacrificing nursing care during the cholera epidemic in 1846, the Elizabethines received recognition and praise by means of a public decree.

In 1913 the hospital wing, which had been built between 1834 and 1836, was expanded. During the Second World War, the St. Elisabeth Hospital served as a military hospital under the direction of the Red Cross and received several bomb hits. Nevertheless, on May 1, 1945 it came under the direction of the order again. A series of additions and extensions followed from 1965, and the hospital was rebuilt in the 1980s. In June 2007 the convents of the Elisabethinen Linz and Vienna merged and the takeover into the Elisabeth von Thüringen Holding.

pharmacy

The pharmacy of the St. Elisabeth Hospital is one of three remaining hospital pharmacies from the baroque period in Vienna and the last one that is still in operation, but it has no public rights.

It was founded by Maria Theresa of Austria, presumably in 1749.

Who the sumptuously designed furniture comes from is just as little known as the painter of the wall and ceiling paintings. However, this should come from the circle of Franz Anton Maulbertsch . Among other things, angels with medicinal plants and pharmacist's utensils in their hands are depicted in order to establish the relationship to the purpose of the premises.
