The Elizabeth Church in Gdańsk (Polish: Kościół św. Elżbiety w Gdańsku ) was the second church of the Gdańsk Evangelical Reformed Church from 1622 to 1820.

history

Elisabeth Church around 1900

In 1393 and 1394, the St. Elisabeth Chapel was built next to the existing poor house. The poor house was converted into a hospital. In 1417 the construction of today's Elisabeth Church was finished. The bell tower was built later.

During the construction of the city wall, which began in 1547, some hospital buildings were demolished and the cemetery closed. The main entrance to the church was walled up. In 1557 the church was taken over by the Gdańsk Evangelical Reformed Church, which kept the building until 1820. From 1603 to 1618 the clergyman Jacob Adam worked in the church .

From 1844 to 1945 the Elisabethkirche served as a garrison church . The city wall was demolished at the end of the 19th century.

During the Second World War , the building suffered considerable damage in early April 1945. The church with the hospital buildings burned down. The church ruins were handed over to the Polish Order of Pallottines (Society of the Catholic Apostolate). In 1947 the rebuilt church was consecrated. 1956 to 1958 after the Polish October turn of 1956 , the reconstruction of the hospital building was approved, which has served the church ever since. The church was entered in the register of monuments of the Pomeranian Voivodeship on September 6, 1971 under the number A-545. In 1993 the interior of the church was thoroughly renovated.

architecture

The Gothic brick church building has a single nave, with a tower on the main facade and a rectangular apse , a star vault and a chapel attached to the side. In contrast to the simple main facade, the apse has a richly decorated gable. Both side facades each have four window axes. The tower now has a simple tent roof, a high tower structure with a gloriette was visible on a photo from the 1900s . The nave and the apse have gable roofs covered with roof tiles.

The bronze entrance door was created in 1987. This is indicated by the date 12.VI.1987. It is a representation of the Christianization of Poland in the year 966. The word "Chrzest" means "baptism". Duke Mieszko I of Poland kneels on the right . St. Bishop Adalbert of Prague , shown on the left, did not come to Poland until 30 years later.
