Elisabeth Tower (2015)

The Elisabeth Tower is a lookout tower in the Schleswig-Holstein community of Schönwalde am Bungsberg . It stands 200 meters south of the top of the Bungsberg , the highest point in Schleswig-Holstein , at an altitude of 164 meters.

The octagonal tower made of granite blocks is 22 meters high.

history

The planning for the construction of the tower began in 1861. It was inspired by the on Pilsberg in Panker built observation tower Hessenstein (built in 1841) and the Gömnitzer Tower (navaids, built in 1828).

In 1863/1864 the tower with a height of 64  feet was built by the Oldenburg Grand Duke Nikolaus Friedrich Peter and named after his wife Elisabeth von Sachsen-Altenburg . In 1875 the tower was raised by 12 to 76 feet as the trees that had now grown obscured the view.

Between 1954 and 1960 the tower served as a VHF transmission tower.

The Elisabeth Tower has been open to the public since summer 2017 after an extensive renovation costing 330,000 euros. It is a listed building.
