The Gömnitzer Tower (also known as "Major") is a former sea mark on the top of the 93.80 m high Gömnitzer Mountain near the village of Gömnitz in the Ostholstein district ( Süsel municipality ) in Schleswig-Holstein . From the Gömitzer Tower, four small openings offer a view of the surrounding landscape of Holstein Switzerland and the Bay of Lübeck .

The Gömnitzer Tower is the symbol of the community of Süsel, whose coat of arms shows the tower.

It is a round column about 12 m (30 feet ) high, made of 20,000 bricks on a foundation of field stones, with a diameter of about 2 m. The top of the tower is covered with hewn natural stones. Below the top of the tower are four small openings (light shafts) - two oval openings and two windows opposite each other. The tower is accessible via an entrance, inside a 41-step spiral staircase leads to the top.

The tower stands on an oval plateau, supported by field stones and bordered by a fence, in the middle of a cattle pasture.

history

Up until 1815 there was a large tree (an oak or a beech ) called "Major" on the top of the Gömnitzer Berg, which was used as a landmark for the ships in the Lübeck Bay to find their way to Lübeck . This tree was destroyed by a lightning strike or a storm.

Since the seafarers lacked this landmark for orientation, the Duke of Oldenburg , the sovereign of the Principality of Lübeck at that time , requested the establishment of an artificial sea mark by the Travemünder Lotsenkommandantur .

  • In 1826 the construction of the sea mark was approved.
  • The tower was built in 1826/1827.
  • the imaginary line between the mouth of the Harkenbäk and the Gömnitzer Tower represents the north-eastern border of Lübeck's fishing sovereignty (see also Lübeck Bay Fall )
  • In 1961 the Waterways and Shipping Office intended to demolish it
  • On March 24, 1969 the tower was placed under monument protection as a cultural monument "Round tower (sea mark) around 1828 on the Gömnitzer Berg" .
  • In 1982 a renovation took place
  • In 1990 it was restored again.
  • The tower has been open as a lookout tower since mid-1993
