Elke Steiner

Elke Renate Steiner (* 1971 in Bremen ) is a German illustrator and comic artist . She lives and works in Berlin .

life and work

Steiner first studied fine art at the Münster Art Academy . She switched to the design department at the Münster University of Applied Sciences in order to come into contact with comic artists. Steiner graduated with a diploma in 1999 for her comic book Die Poisonmischerin , which she published herself. Short stories by Steiner appear regularly in the Bremen fanzine panel Ambixious Comix .

After her diploma, she received a scholarship from the Jewish Museum in Rendsburg and the Dr.-Bamberger-Haus, whereupon Steiner began work on a comic about local Jewish history, which was first published in 2001 under the title Rendsburg Prinzessinstrasse - The history of a small Jewish township in the PANEL edition was published. Originals of the pages were exhibited in many places, including at the Fumetto comic festival in Switzerland, as well as in Bremen and Wiesbaden.

The other Mendelssohns has dealt with the “black sheep” of the famous family since the first volume was published in 2004 and illuminates the individual lines of the family tree, based on the six children of Moses Mendelssohn . The first volume, which was created in collaboration with the Jewish Culture Days and the Jewish Adult Education Center in Berlin, therefore bears the full title The Other Mendelssohns - Dorothea Schlegel, Arnold Mendelssohn .

Steiner lives and works in Berlin as a comic artist and illustrator for magazines, newspapers and advertising. Since 2002 she has also led comic workshops for young people, adults and now also children. In 2007 she also illustrated the children's books Bella's Brazilian Football and Bella's Chocolate Surprise by Adam Giullain.
