Ella ( Tamil : எல்ல; Sinhala : ඇල්ල for "waterfall") is a small town in the highlands of Sri Lanka . It is surrounded by tea plantations at an altitude of around 1000 m . According to the 2012 census , it had around 45,000 inhabitants.

Ella is located around 22 km south of the provincial capital Badulla , 54 km southeast of Nuwara Eliya and 127 km east of the sacred mountain Adam’s Peak .
The city is known for the landscapes that surround it, such as the mountain rainforest and the tea plantations.
tourism
Ella has become a popular destination for individual tourists. An attraction and also destination for hiking is located above the Wellawaya-Ella-Kumbalwela Highway rocks Ella .
Another special feature is Adam's Peak, around 127 km to the west .
