Nuwara Eliya ( Sinhala නුවරඑළිය nuvara eḷiya , Tamil நுவரெலியா , spoken [ ˈnuvərə ˌelijə ], "City of Light") is a small town with around 25,000 inhabitants in the central province of Sri Lanka (1990 m above sea level ), which is beautifully framed by mountains.
History and Buildings
The place was founded in the 19th century by Samuel Baker as a resort for British colonial officials . Many of the buildings have been preserved to this day, e.g. B. the Hotel The Hill Club . Attractions include the Victoria Park, the Botanical Gardens Hakgala Gardens and Bird Park Galway's Land Bird Sanctuary . There is also a motorcycle racing track ( Diyatalawa circuit ), a Formula 3 car racing track , a horse racing course and an 18-hole golf course , which is known nationwide .
Attractions
You can hike Mount Single Tree above Haddon Hill, from the top of which you have a wide view. The mountain Pidurutalagala (English: Mount Pedro , 2,524 m) is closed to the public. On the outskirts is the Hindu temple Sita Eliya , in which the demon king Ravana is said to be imprisoned.
Close to the city, around Sri Pada / Adam's Peak, there is the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary National Park , where large game (including leopards ) live. In the Horton Plains, south of Nuwara Eliya, is the Horton Plains National Park with a 1,050 m deep rock ledge known as the World's End . The mountainous region around the city also has several larger waterfalls and reservoirs , such as Lake Gregory .
Climate and vegetation
