Tea growing areas

The tea plantations there are around the whole globe in all tropical and subtropical zones both in the plains and in the mountains . Around 4.2 million hectares were planted with tea worldwide in 2018.

General

The harvest time depends on the geographical location ; the further away from the equator the cultivation area, the shorter it is. In Argentina , tea is harvested from December to February, in Turkey around six weeks from the end of May to the end of June / July and in Japan the harvest begins at the earliest at the end of April / beginning of May and ends in August. Except in Sri Lanka , Kenya , Tanzania or Indonesia , the tea plant is harvested all year round.

Africa

On the continent of Africa, tea is grown in Burundi , Cameroon , Kenya , Malawi , Mozambique , Rwanda , Tanzania, Uganda , the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zimbabwe . The CTC broken tea is produced and in Kenya high quality tea similar to Ceylon tea is grown from the highlands.

Australia

Tea has been grown in northern Queensland since the late 1950s / early 1960s . This tea does not have a very long shelf life and is therefore not exported and only consumed by Australians.

China

In the east of the cultivation area of ​​the Anhui province , the world-famous black tea from Qimen (Keemun), the green tea from Tunxi and the green Mao Feng from the mountain slopes of Huang Shan are grown. Fujian is the largest tea-growing region on the south coast of China . There the tea plants are processed into white , green , oolongs , jasmine and black tea. The province of Guangdong is famous for its black, oolong and Phoenix Dancong tea. Green tea with its own taste has been produced in the province of Yunnan for 1700 years, black tea has also been produced in this region since 1937 and the most famous is Pu-Erh tea . The Long Ching tea comes from the province of Zhejiang .

India

The Assam tea is in the northeast of India along the 600 km long river Brahmaputra in the hot plateau of Assam grown. The Assam region has 2000 tea plantations. The tea bushes of Darjeeling grow on the southern mountainside of the Himalayas . The second largest tea-growing area is located in the southwest in the hilly highlands of the provinces of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Nilgiri tea is grown there at an altitude between 800 meters and 2200 meters and there are around 20,000 tea gardens that are no larger than 10 hectares . These are cultivated exclusively by the small farmers.

Japan

Tea has been cultivated in Japan for 1000 years and Sencha tea is predominantly produced.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is the fourth largest tea growing area in the world. Ceylon tea has been produced there for over 100 years . There are the growing areas: Dimbula, Uva and Nuwara Eliya . The teas from the three growing areas taste very different.
