The Ellbachsee is a cirque lake in the northern Black Forest on the southwest edge of the district of Baiersbronn in the Freudenstadt district in Baden-Württemberg .

The lake is located around 1.3 km north of Kniebis (district of Freudenstadt ) and around 5.5 km southwest of Mitteltal (district of Baiersbronn). From the viewing platform Ellbachseeblick , which was built in 2013 at 921 m above sea level , you have a view of the lake, which is around 150 meters lower, and the houses of Mitteltal in the background.

The silting up, originally almost round lake is only the shape of a three-fingered hand. The "fingers" facing south-southwest are between 80 and 110 meters in length and the "palm" in the north has a diameter of around 40 meters. The body of water, which is mainly covered by vibrating turf , has a maximum diameter of almost 150 meters.

Like all cirque lakes, the Ellbachsee was created by glaciers. The last deepening of the lake basin happened during the Würm glacial period , which ended in the Black Forest about 10,000 years ago.

The Ellbachsee and its surroundings are designated as an extensive natural monument (7.1 ha).
