Elle ezkera

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elle ezkera ( Ele ezkera; also: Asara Haruge Malchut ) is an aggadic midrash that emerged after 500 . It is named after Ps 42,5  EU : אֵ֤לֶּה אֶזְכְּרָה I want to commemorate them and describe the execution of ten famous Tannaites :

  1. Rabban Simeon ben Gamaliel II.
  2. High Priest Ishmael ben Elisha ha-Kohen Gadol
  3. Rabbi Akiba
  4. Chanina ben Teradjon
  5. Yehuda ben Baba
  6. Yehuda ben Dama
  7. Chutspit
  8. Chananja ben Chakinai
  9. Jeschebab
  10. Eleazar ben Shammua

The account is unhistorical, the ten men lived at different times and could not be executed at the same time. The number 10 is added to establish a connection with the ten brothers of Joseph , who once sold him to Egypt, for which the ten martyrs are now making atonement . Their martyrdom also stands for the guarantee of coming redemption and the near end of Rome . Along with the Aqedat Isaak, this script was part of the basis of Jewish martyrology in the Middle Ages and has therefore been preserved in numerous manuscripts and versions.
