Ellen Joyce Loo
Ellen Joyce Loo ( Chinese 盧凱彤 / 卢凯彤 ; born March 27, 1986 in Toronto , Canada ; died August 5, 2018 in Hong Kong , China) was a Canadian-Hong Kong musician, singer, and songwriter. She was a co-founder of the folk-pop-rock group at17 .
youth
Loo moved to Hong Kong with her parents when she was four. Ellen Joyce Loo attended St. Paul's Convent School for girls in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay district . From the age of nine, she learned to play classical guitar from her father. When she was 14 years old, she and her older brother PJ Loo took part in the Original Music 2000 (原音 2000) music competition held by Tom Lee Music in Hong Kong. Loo and her brother finished third.
Working life
When she was 15, Loo formed the group at17 with Eman Lam and signed a contract with the music production company People Mountain People Sea.
In addition to writing songs for her own group, Loo was involved in the production and songwriting for the albums of other artists such as Kay Tse , Miriam Yeung and Sally Yeh .
Private life
Loo was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2013, as announced in April 2015. She came out as a lesbian at the Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan in 2017 . In 2016 she married the Taiwanese camerawoman Fisher Yu. The couple registered the marriage in Canada.
death
Loo died after falling from her home in Happy Valley, Hong Kong . The case was classified as a suicide by the police after viewing video surveillance footage. No suicide note was found.
