Houses

The students at St. Paul's Convent School are divided into six “houses”. In annual events such as the sports festival or the swimming gala, the six houses compete against each other in cheering competitions and try to determine the winner of all houses and win the cheering prize.

House Morris (Purple)

Named after Margaret Morris (1891–1980), a London born dancer. She received no institutional education, but had dance lessons, where she soon rebelled against classical ballet and created exercises herself. She adapted six classical Greek dance positions as the basis of her own movement system. In 1915 she opened the Margaret Morris Club , which became a center for discussion and presentation of creative ideas. She developed her exercises into sports training for the disabled and in school education. Their influence on the modern practice of physical exercises for the disabled and on choreographic innovations has been immense. The Morris house is ahead in the cheering competitions. At the 2019-2020 sports festival, it achieved a high score of 192 points.

House Cavell (Blue)

Named after Edith Louisa Cavell (1865–1915), a British nurse who was a celebrated martyr during the First World War. Born in England, Cavell began her nurse career in a London hospital in 1895. She later became the first director of the Berkendael Medical Institute in Brussels . During her work, she helped British, French and Belgian soldiers escape through the Dutch front. For these activities Edith Cavell was accused by the Germans as a spy and executed.

House Kenny (Green)

Named after Elizabeth Kenny (1886–1952), an Australian nurse known for her technique of treating poliomyelitis, or polio. Kenny adopted a system of therapy that was sometimes too complicated, excessive, and time-consuming. Even so, Elizabeth Kenny managed to draw attention to poliomyelitis as a national problem. In 1942, the Elizabeth Kenny Institute was founded in Minnesota, USA . Sister Kenny was viewed as the Florence Nightingale of orthopedics.

House Curie (Yellow)

Named after Marie Skłodowska Curie (1867–1934). Together with her husband, the French chemist Pierre Curie, Marie Curie discovered polonium and radium . She is the only person to have won two Nobel Prizes, 1903 and 1911. Marie Curie founded the Paris Institute of Radium and was appointed director by the French government. Curie fell victim to leukemia as she had been exposed to radioactive radiation for a very long time through her experiments.

House basement (red)

Named after Helen Adams Keller (1880–1968), an American author and teacher for the blind. Since childhood, Keller could neither speak, hear nor see. With the help of Anne M. Sullivan , Keller learned to read and write Braille , use a typewriter, speak and speak five languages. After graduating from Radcliffe College with honors, she began training the blind intensively and received many honors for her achievements. Helen Keller continued the work of the Foundation of the Blind.

House Mason (Orange)

Named after Charlotte Mason (Marie Shew; 1842–1923), a teacher whose philosophy has a great influence on the practice of modern elementary schools. She believed in the reaction of all children to all living ideas presented in literary form. Children should love their lessons. The need for knowledge should be the only motivation. She also valued the importance of parental involvement in children's self-esteem and progress. She founded the Parents' Union School , a distance learning school that spread across England. The demand from Heads of House to use their methods led her to train young women and improve their status by demanding adequate pay and working conditions. These students were trained in their home in Ambersice, now Charlotte Mason College .
