Ellen Weller

Ellen Weller (born before 1978) is an American multi-instrumentalist, improvisation musician, ethnomusicologist, composer and music teacher.

Weller studied until 1978 flute at the California State University , then to 1992 composition at Queens College of the City University of New York . She received her doctorate in music critical studies and experimental practice from the University of California in 2002 . She teaches music theory, world music and jazz at Palomar College .

Weller plays various flutes (including piccolo, flute and recorder), clarinet (soprano, bass, contralto), saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone), guitar and piano. She was a founding member of the big band Maiden Voyage and is active in the group Trümmerflora Collective in San Diego and has performed at festivals such as the SF Alt and Edgetone Festivals in San Francisco, Spring Reverb in San Diego and Big Sur Sound Shift . Her musical partners included George Lewis , Mark Dresser , Bert Turetzky , Vinny Golia , Lisle Ellis , Mike Woffard , Holly Hofmann , Joe Marillo , Anthony Davis , Muhal Richard Abrams , David Borgo , Jason Robinson , the Nathan Hubbard Skeleton Key Orchestra , Lesli Dalaba , Carla Kihlstadt , Ernesto Diaz-Infante , Hans Fjellestad , Vanessa Tomlinson , Marcos Fernandes , Michael Dessen , Michael Friedman , Farhad Bahrami and the Second Avenue Klezmer Ensemble .

Her compositions for piano, flute, voice and chamber ensemble have been performed in New York, Detroit, San Diego and Los Angeles, among others. Her more recent compositions include Prior's Waltz for orchestra. 1918: for two pianos and Community , incidental music for Angels in America , the Pine Apple Rag for piano and orchestra and an arrangement of Bei Mir Bist Du Shein for orchestra and klezmer ensemble.
