Elmar Ternes

Elmar Ternes (born November 24, 1941 in Trier ; † June 16, 2020 ) was a German linguist .

After studying phonetics , English and Romance linguistics , he received his doctorate in 1970 from the University of Saarbrücken . There he completed his habilitation in 1977 in the subjects of phonetics and celtology . In the same year he was appointed professor for general and applied phonetics at the University of Hamburg . He retired on April 1, 2007. In recognition of his work in the study of the Gaelic languages, Ternes was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow on July 13, 2015 .
